Speech and Language Lesson - Week 2

Welcome to Week 2 of my online speech and language lessons during COVID-19 school closures. These lessons will be LIVE on Zoom Monday mornings at 10am (with Ms. Shelley) for my Kindergarten Language students and Wednesday mornings at 10am for my Preschool Language students. I will also post the video here each week for those who can not attend. This week we read a book called From Head to Toe.

Here is an optional home activity to target /k/ sounds and following directions!

Cut out two copies of the dice page, so that you can have two dice. Print out the animals page and color them. Glue one animal on each square of the two dice. Assemble the dice by gluing or taping the tabs.

To play: Choose one of the dice and roll it on your turn. If you roll the penguin, say "I can (turn my head)" and do the action with your child. Make sure the child is saying their good /k/ sound! Take turns continuing play until you are ready to be done. Help your child say all of the words and not leave any out of their sentence.

April 6th-10th Homework pages

Here are the weekly words lists for my articulation students to work on at home. Pick the list that your student is working on. These words are similar, or the same, to what we worked on in our most recent Zoom sessions.

Say each word 10 times each day (Mon-Fri). If your child does not have much difficulty with saying each word 10 times, have them make a sentence about each word after saying the word 10 times. It works best to find a time each day to do speech for 5 minutes. Find something and stick with it! Consistency is key.

Skill # 1: Talk To Your Child

Here is a video explaining the first skill I want to share with you. Below I've also included some tips of what to talk about from ASHA (The American Speech-Language Hearing Association).

• Speak clearly to your child. Model good speech.
• Repeat what your child says to show that you understand. Add on to what she says. Use words like, "Want juice? I have juice. I have apple juice. Do you want apple juice?"
• It's okay to use baby talk sometimes. Be sure to use the adult word too. For example, "It is time for din-din. We will have dinner now."
• Cut out pictures of favorite or familiar things. Put them into categories, like things to ride on, things to eat, and things to play with. Make silly pictures by mixing and matching pictures. Glue a picture of a dog behind the wheel of a car. Talk about what is wrong with the picture and ways to "fix" it. 
• Help your child understand and ask questions. Play the yes–no game. Ask questions such as, "Are you Marty?" and "Can a pig fly?" Have your child make up questions and try to fool you.
• Ask questions that include a choice. "Do you want an apple or an orange?" "Do you want to wear your red shirt or your blue shirt?" 
• Help your child learn new words. Name body parts, and talk about what you do with them. "This is my nose. I can smell flowers, brownies, and soap."
• Sing simple songs, and say nursery rhymes. This helps your child learn the rhythm of speech.
• Place familiar objects in a box. Have your child take one out and tell you its name and how to use it. "This is my ball. I bounce it. I play with it."
• Show pictures of familiar people and places. Talk about who they are and what happened. Try making up new stories.

Speech and Language Lesson - Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of my online speech and language lessons during COVID-19 school closures. I miss all my students and can't wait to see you again! These lessons will be LIVE on Zoom Wednesday mornings at 10am. I will also post the video each week for those who can not attend. This week we read a book called Glad Monster Sad Monster! 

School Closure Information: COVID-19

Hello Parents and Guardians! 

First of all, I miss your kiddos so much!!!! During the school closure, I will be providing a variety of services for your students. This activities are all optional. I know this is a chaotic and stressful time for everyone, and if you are unable to add anything else to your plate, I completely understand! But I want to provide options for those who are able and wanting some speech-language therapy during this time.

Every student will receive:

-a "skill" of the week video or handout to help you work with your child each week

-a calendar with daily speech and language activities that can be done at home in just a few minutes

Students with language goals will receive:

-weekly group lesson/activity via Zoom* (if you cannot log in at the time this is offered, I will also be recording myself doing the lessons so that you can watch later with your child). 

Students with articulation goals will receive:

-weekly small group "speech labs" via Zoom* to practice correct sound production

-target word lists to practice at home

*You will receive a separate message via School Status in the near future with the schedule and login for the Zoom meetings that pertain to your child. Please download the Zoom app on your phone or computer.

All handouts, videos, etc. will be posted on your child's teacher site (Google Classroom for Preschool and Seesaw for Kindergarten). I will send out a quick blast via School Status when things are posted so you know when and where to look! I will also probably post them here on my blog for easy reference.

Remember that participating in these Zoom activities is optional, and I also realize that the times that work for me may not work for you. So in addition to the items above, I am also always available by phone, email, Zoom, etc. during typical school hours to answer your questions and figure out how to best support your student at home.
