Summer Homework Calendars 2020

Here are some links to some awesome summer homework calendars if you are looking for something easy to do each day with your child this summer.

Articulation Calendars HERE

I have good intentions of doing "Summer Magic" with my kiddos again this year, and blogging it like I did a few years ago. We do themed weeks with lots of fun activities, snacks, books, games and movies and they are awesome for promoting language development. Plus its fun to plan and do awesome things with your kiddos! Feel free to check back to see if I actually get around to posting this year... but in the mean time, check out my past posts here:

The main point of summer is to interact with your child! Have fun. Enjoy each other. Talk. Snuggle. Read. Look at my Skills videos to learn how to best maximize this time and promote language development. Reach out to me if you have any questions! And most of all, HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Speech and Language Lesson Week 8

Welcome to Week 8 of my online speech and language lessons during COVID-19 school closures. This week we read a book called "What Pet Should I Get?"

**This is the last week of school, and therefore my last recorded lesson. I hope you have enjoyed using them as much as I have enjoyed making them! I hope everyone has a great summer- stay safe and healthy, and tell all my students how much I miss them!**

Skill #7: Stop Asking Questions!

"Questions can put the child on the defensive and can lead to the child saying or doing less, rather than more."

Please check out this website for AWESOME resources and tips on how to improve communication with your child by using less questions!

Speech and Language Lesson Week 7

Welcome to Week 7 of my online speech and language lessons during COVID-19 school closures. These lessons will be LIVE on Zoom Monday mornings at 10am (with Ms. Shelley) for my Kindergarten Language students and Wednesday mornings at 10am for my Preschool Language students. I will also post the video here each week for those who can not attend. This week we read a book called Let's Go for a Drive!

Skill #6: Screen Time

Check out this awesome link with some great info and studies on screen time and language development! https://www.speechandlanguagekids.com/screen-time-and-language-development/

Here are some ideas of things to do instead of screens with your child. Remember that in order for your child to be off screens, you need to be willing to be off your screens too!

  • Talk with your child.  If your child is only giving you one-word responses, try asking more specific questions (like “who did you eat lunch with”) instead of open-ended questions (like “how was your day?”).
  • Sing songs
  • Read a book
  • Play with your child’s favorite toy
  • Color a picture
  • Make a craft project
  • Play in the yard
  • Go for a walk
  • Take your child to a park
  • Go for a car ride and talk about what you see
  • Go to the library and look for books on a topic that interests your child
  • Play a board game
  • Teach your child a new skill
  • Teach or practice a sport in the back yard
  • Ride bikes
  • Go somewhere with an indoor play-place
  • Call up some friends and have a play date
  • Cook something in the kitchen together
  • Plant seeds or plants in a garden
  • Do a family service project together, like helping an elderly neighbor with house work
